Leather Jacket Alert!

In recent weeks our lawn care technicians have noticed large numbers of Crane Fly actively laying eggs on many of our customers lawns.

Because conditions are currently warm and moist it is highly likely that the eggs will hatch which could cause Leather Jacket infestations during this winter and into next spring.

Please contact our office if you need advise regarding treatment.

Leather Jacket Facts

  • Leather Jackets are the larvae of The Crane Fly or “daddy long legs”.
  • They are fat, soft-bodied, brown to greyish black creatures which can grow up to 5 cm long.
  • Eggs are laid by Crane Flies as they emerge during the late summer/early autumn and hatch after a few weeks.
  • Leather Jackets damage lawns by feeding on the roots of the grass during the winter months, often going undetected until the spring, when substantial damage may have already occurred.
  • By treating a lawn in the autumn/winter when the larvae have just hatched the damage can be prevented.
  • Badly affected areas may need to be re-seeded or turfed.
