Once again a warm, wet spell has brought about an outbreak of Red Thread on lawns across the UK. We are taking a lot of calls from concerned lawn owners, fearful that their lawns are about to fall victim to this phantom menace. Please don’t panic though, we’re here to reassure you that Red Thread is largely harmless and your lawn will recover by itself.

Q: What is Red Thread?

A: Red Thread is a fungal disease, which thrives on lawns when conditions are warm and wet. This often occurs around May / June here in the UK. The good news is that the disease only attacks the blades of the grass plants, leaving the roots unaffected. It is short-lived, and in most cases the grass will grow out to its former strength and vigour. Clients with Lawntech’s Annual Lawn Care Programme will benefit from the regular Early Summer (T2) and Summer (T3) Fertiliser treatments, which will help give the lawn a nutrient boost to help it push the Red Thread out of its system.

Unless your entire lawn is covered by these patches, we do not recommend fungicide treatments.

Unless your lawn is completely covered with the telltale browny-red patches, we do not recommend treating it with fungicide. This is because these treatments can be expensive and their protection short-lived, lasting only for one month. By that time the weather conditions can easily have changed and brought about another outbreak of Red Thread.

We hope this piece has reassured you that Red Thread is mostly a short-term eyesore, and will not destroy your lawn. For a more detailed article, please follow the link to our Lawn Care Guide…
