Have you ever wondered what happens to the plastic containers and bags that our lawn care products come in? We currently treat 6 million square metres of lawn every year, which means we get through an awful lot of lawn care products. All of these arrive at our depot in robust packaging, so those containers and wrappings have to go somewhere once we are finished with them. Rather than letting them go to landfill we send all of our used packaging for recycling with Kitson Recycling, who are part of the Solway Recycling group. They are based near Andover, which keeps the carbon footprint for the whole process to a minimum. This was an important factor in our decision making.

All loaded up and ready for recycling – just like all of Lawntech’s used packaging

Lawntech Managing Director Jim Hewlett takes up the story; “All chemical containers are triple rinsed at the time of use before being sorted into the appropriate bins, and plastic fertiliser bags go into a separate, unique bin because the materials used are different types of plastic. Large white dumpy bags are reused by us until they reach the end of their useful life and then they go in a separate bin for woven plastics.” Kitson Recycling periodically collect the empty plastic products from our depot so they can be recycled. Recycling has come a long way in a relatively short space of time, and the waste plastics which Kitson Recycling process for us through the Solway Group are now used to produce a wide range of horticultural and agricultural items. These include Decking, Fencing, Raised Beds, Planters and also Shelters for animals such as Cattle, Sheep, Pigs and Chickens.
