However, it’s vital to remember that it’s not only what is on the surface of your lawn that matters. It’s important to take care of what lies beneath too, and we know that understanding your soil is one of the most significant elements to lawn care.

A healthy lawn needs healthy soil

Many of us dedicate a lot of hard work to sprucing up our outdoor spaces, including taking good care of our lawns and gardens, but getting to know your soil is the most important thing you can learn about your garden to ensure the successful growth of grass plants for a healthy lawn.

A healthy lawn needs a healthy soil, much like we maintain the ideal soil conditions for our garden plants to prosper.

Gardening and introducing a new variety of plants and crops to our gardens brings our outdoor space to life with beautiful colours and fresh produce to enjoy. Ideal soil conditions for these plants can be contained in sections such as plants pots and raised beds. However, for our lawns and larger areas, it is important to understand the characteristics of the soil type you are working with. Without this knowledge, your careful planting, weeding, and tending could be in vain.

How can Lawntech understand your soil?

The soil provides your lawn with the vital nutrients, water, and air it needs to develop and for healthy growth. Our garden’s ground has its own blend of elements and nutrients which determine the successful growth of your grass plants. Getting to know your soil and its unique qualities is important to ensure we make the right choices for your lawn.

Our technician, Bradley, with a soil profile from our customer’s lawn. From this sample, Bradley can assess any obvious signs of stress in the soil.

For most lawns our technicians will carry out a visual inspection of your lawn’s soil. This involves a small soil profile being extracted from your lawn for your technician to assess the root structure. From this soil profile, your technician can gain a better understanding to conclude whether there any signs of weakness in your soil. From here, your technician is then able to create a programme in order to improve your lawn’s condition.

Soil testing a problematic lawn

Lawns which experience persistent problems may require further investigation and a more scientific approach than a soil profile.

A small soil sample is sent away for laboratory testing. This will measure the key nutrient and pH levels in your soil.

If your lawn is failing and struggling to thrive, there could be a deficiency in the key elements and nutrients the soil needs to sustain healthy grass. For lawns which are more prone to recurring disease, a lawn that isn’t responding to regular treatments with no sign of improvement, or if your lawn is showing signs of soil contamination, your technician may require an analysis of your soil from a laboratory soil test.

A small sample from your soil is sent away for laboratory testing to measure pH, available nutrient, trace elements and cation exchange capacity within the soil. This is soon returned to your technician with the detailed soil analysis result which highlights any deficiencies which may be detrimental to your lawn’s growth.

An example of a soil analysis result for one of our customers with a troublesome lawn in need of a laboratory soil test. This highlights the key nutrient and pH levels in the soil so that their technician can understand any deficiencies that may need attention.

With this analysis, your technician can make recommendations to build an enhanced programme around your lawn to apply and maintain the correct level of nutrients to improve the condition in the soil.  In extreme cases where the soil is contaminated, inert or has severe deficiencies which cannot be adjusted by treatments, it might be necessary to carry out more intensive landscaping work to change or improve the soil.

You can be confident that whatever your soil’s condition, with our technician’s skill and understanding, your lawn is receiving the healthy balance of nutrients it requires to benefit from its recommended treatment programme and sustain healthy growth.
