Lawns are, of course, a man-made contrivance so we shouldn’t be surprised when Mother Nature moves to take back lost ground at every opportunity. We’re used to nipping out any weeds that appear in our flower beds, borders and veg plots where we expect them to pop up, but somehow when they show their faces on our lawns some take it as a personal outrage. Others, meanwhile, are more than happy to live in harmony with our little invaders and settle for a less manicured lawn.

May and June are perfect months for weeds to reveal themselves, especially after a lawn specialist or gardener has created an environment for a healthy lawn. Unfortunately, science has not yet given us a selective fertiliser to feed and encourage the grass plants only, so all that lovely nutrient goes to nourish the weeds as much as the lawn we’re trying to nurture!

Mowing regularly and increasing sward density is one way to reduce weeds on your lawn. It might not be a long-term solution, though.

Many of our clients take a relaxed view, regarding weeds as simply a flower that has taken root in a place which suits the plants rather more than it does the owner. They are happy to remove the weeds manually as they appear, rather than resorting to weed killer. They understand that an odd weed here or there will not threaten to overrun their lawn, and will be easier to control if dealt with at an early stage. It’s certainly one way to manage a lawn, and it fits very nicely with our Organic Lawn Care Programme. This consists of fully organic fertilisers and moss control, but weed control is left to the client to manage as there is currently no organic solution available.

Our Standard Annual Lawn Care Programme does include weed control of course, and in most cases this consists of a single spot-treatment in early summer (May or June). Clients who take a full programme also enjoy a free top-up in the autumn, where required. Lawntech very seldom carries out a full, blanket weed control treatment as we prefer to be as ecologically friendly as we can be, even with the latest generation of non-residual chemical treatments. We can successfully keep most species of indigenous weeds controlled in this way, with the exception of Speedwell and Field Woodrush, which tend to be resistant and often need to be dug out.

To help you identify any wicked weeds which pop up on your lawn, here are all the usual suspects lined up in our handy Lawntech Weed Identification Parade.

These are the most common weed species found in the UK. How many have you spotted on your lawn?
