Question: How do I control moss on my lawn?

Time never stands still on the lawn care calendar. Those beautifully coloured autumn leaves are blown off the trees on to our prized lawns, and hard-working gardeners move them on from their prized lawns before they can do any damage. As the seasons change and conditions become damp and grey, our technicians are hard at work combating moss on our clients’ lawns. It’s a widespread problem all the way through from late autumn to the end of winter, as the days get shorter and conditions are damp, but as always we have a solution.

Lawntech to the rescue. That moss is on borrowed time!

Why do we get rid of Moss from our lawns? Is it really that bad?

If left unchecked, moss can completely take over a lawn, thickening up to stifle the grass and eventually replace it entirely. If there are any shady or patchy areas on the lawn, moss will find it and thrive. The damp conditions of an English autumn and winter will give it all the encouragement it needs, too. A healthy lawn, with few gaps between the grass plants will stay strong as it denies the moss any space in which to invade and establish.

Will a Moss treatment kill it off?

Moss has seen off centuries of human endeavour when it comes to controlling it and to be honest, it can look beautiful in the appropriate place in our countryside. It is not possible to indefinitely eradicate moss but, using the most appropriate, environmentally friendly applications at the right time of year it can be effectively controlled. Lawntech’s programme of treatment has evolved to produce powerful, reliable results for our clients’ lawns.

Moss comes in many varieties.

How does Moss treatment work?

Lawntech’s Moss Control is a special blend of liquid iron and wetting agents, with additional trace elements. Along with the effective control of the moss, our solution brings an important bonus as it hardens and strengthens the grass plants over the winter. This helps it stay in the best possible shape for the spring that follows, enabling it to kick-start back into growth after its hibernation. There are a few other systemic and bacterial products available for moss control which can give good results at certain times of the year. If you are a keen gardener and wish to tackle the problem yourself, we would recommend using a product called Lawn Sand. This is a mixture of Sulphate of Iron and Sulphate of Ammonia, which should be applied in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s safety recommendations.

When is the best time for Moss treatments on my lawn?

The cool, damp conditions from late autumn to the end of winter are ideal for moss to thrive, and these are the perfect times for our treatments too. Experience has told us that just one treatment at this time will not be enough to give adequate control, so our Annual Lawn Care Programme has developed to apply two over this long 5-month season. The first will be planned to be carried out between October and December, with the second following on between January and March.

Protracted spells of heavy rain or other adverse weather conditions may have a bearing on the effective longevity of an application, and may determine the timescale before the second treatment is necessary.

What should I expect after Moss treatment?

Our Moss Control is fast-acting. Very soon after treatment, you should see the moss change colour from green to brown or black. This necrosis will not be visible for long, as your lawn recovers and the grass fills in the gaps left by the dead moss. If you wish to help this process along, feel free to rake out the dead moss and dispose of it. For lawns which have a high volume of moss and need extra help with recovery, our Lawn Renovation package of Scarification, Aeration and Over-seeding delivers a perfect solution.

How soon after a Moss treatment can I mow my lawn?

We always advise leaving 2-3 days after a treatment, so that it has enough time for the moss to fully absorb the solution.
