Children love to be outside, exploring with wildlife and nature, and here at Lawntech we are keen to encourage young gardeners. Having children engage in the garden by growing their own fruit and vegetables, not only teaches them about plants and where some of our most nutritious food comes from but also encourages a healthy eating habit too. Great for parents, and fun for children, it’s a rewarding hobby to have!

We’ve put together some ideas to get those little green fingers into the garden for National Children’s Gardening Week that runs from 27th May – 4th June this year.

Make a fairy garden

A miniature fairy garden is fun to make and can make an enchanted addition to your garden. A plant pot or suitable container, topped with soil and arranged with miniature live plants and fairy garden accessories is a great way to have children planting a magical garden of their own.

Grow a herb garden

Most herbs are easy to grow and take very little care to flourish so make a great garden project for children. A popular choice is a pizza herb garden. Most children love pizza, so growing their own herb toppings consisting of basil, parsley and oregano is an exciting (and tasty) way for a child to learn about culinary herb gardening.

Get crafty with flower pressing

Flower pressing with children is a great way to have children learning about the different plant species in a fun and creative way.  Flower pressing with carefully picked flowers from a section of plant encourages children to examine and appreciate flowers more closely.

Make a pinecone bird feeder

Wildlife is always a great way to encourage children into the garden, and making a pinecone bird feeder is an easy, inexpensive project perfect for young children. Twine string around the pinecone and coat it in a layer of peanut butter as thick or thin as desired. Roll the cone in birdseed for an extra tasty treat.

Paint garden pots

The perfect family-friendly garden activity. Brightly painted plant pots make a fun feature for your garden plants or a great gift for grandparents, aunts, and uncles. Terracotta plant pots work best for this and are great to brighten up patios or borders.

These are just a handful of our favourite ideas for National Children’s Gardening Week, plenty more can be found on their website:

Things to do

Are you considering lawn care?

As the weather warms up and we begin encouraging our children outdoors, our lawns need nutrient and strength to help it through those busy summer months of foot traffic. If you want to leave the fun stuff to the children, and have us take care of your lawn, our annual treatment programme will deliver a healthy balance of nutrient, weed and moss control throughout the year.

We offer an annual lawn care programme to keep your lawn green and healthy throughout the year.
