Droughts & watering your lawn

The UK boasts some of the best-looking lawns in the world thanks to our four distinct seasons and favourable climate. For most of the year our lawns need little intervention when it comes to weather related lawn care but sometimes, we need to assist nature a bit to keep things green and healthy.

Recent Springs and Summers have become increasingly dry and hot in the UK, which means more people are experiencing the issues periods of drought can bring.

It can be incredibly frustrating when you have spent endless hours and expense manicuring your lawn to create a verdant oasis that is the envy of your neighbours when all of a sudden, after just a few weeks of dry weather, nature has other ideas and the lack of rain starts making the lawn look more like a desert rather than the 18th green at Augusta. It is surprising how fast your lawn can dry out, even after a short period of dry weather, when the grass plant starts to shut down and turn dormant to protect itself until moisture arrives.

The speed in which your lawn turns from green to brown will depend very much on the variety of grass and type of soil you have in your garden. Lawns on sandy or chalky soil are likely to dry out much quicker than those on loamy or clay soils which can hold on to moisture for longer. The other thing to consider is the aspect of your lawn, those on raised areas or a free draining terrace are going to dry out quicker and suffer more than those in lower areas which catch more water. The final aspect is how much sun your lawn gets, for most of the year a nice south-facing aspect is perfect but when we get very prolonged hot sunny weather the lawn is likely to be the first to suffer.

We have lots of advice regarding how to prepare and care for your lawn during a drought or prolonged dry weather and what to do if it needs revival after a long dry spell.

Recovery plan for a drought damaged lawn

If your lawn has suffered from a long period of dry weather it is important to have a recovery plan to bring it back to health.  This could mean carrying out some kind of lawn renovation when conditions allow.

Unfortunately, no matter how much love and care we give to our lawn without moisture we have nothing. Without it lawns will not thrive, soon turn brown and go into a dormant state until water is available.

How to maintain your lawn during dry weather

In simple terms, a drought is a period of unusually dry weather that persists long enough to cause environmental problems, such as crop damage and water supply shortages.
