Lawn Aeration Aftercare Advice

If you have had hollowtine aeration carried out by Lawntech, you will have noticed this has left cores on the surface of your lawn. These cores of soil are mechanically removed to allow oxygen, nutrients, and water to penetrate into the root zone. Over time, the cores will melt back into the sward and will (also) be broken up by your mower once you mow.

The fertiliser treatment applied to your lawn is an organic-based fertiliser that will work with the soil to help unlock undigested organic matter and assist in the reduction of thatch and soil compaction to create a green and healthy sward.

Relieve your lawn’s compaction

Hollowtine aeration is our preferred method but on heavy clay ground, we might choose to use spike aeration rather than cores to reduce inconvenience. Aeration helps to relieve compaction in your lawn and if it has been carried out with over-seeding, this will provide an ideal seedbed to increase the chance of successful germination and establish new grass growth.

Can I walk on my lawn after aeration?

Yes, but keep off your lawn as much as possible to give your lawn the best chance of recovery. This will also allow the soil plugs to break down naturally following Hollowtine aeration so that your lawn can benefit fully from this process.

Can my dog go on the lawn after aeration?

Aeration creates open holes in the soil so allowing time for the lawn to recover without disruption is beneficial. However, we understand that your furry friends need to stretch their legs and toilet so unfortunately there is no easy answer to this, but our advice is to keep your dog off the lawn as much as possible to help recovery.

How soon can I mow after aeration?

We recommend waiting about a week for the cores to dry out or wash in before mowing your lawn after aeration.

Should I water my lawn after aeration?

It is not essential to water the lawn after aeration but doing so can help to break down cores left on the surface if there is no rain.

Weeds have appeared on my lawn, what should I do?

Naturally, aeration will stimulate weed growth. This is normal and if you have our annual lawn care treatment programme, as part of this plan the weeds will be treated during your next treatment visit.

Leaves are falling onto my lawn, should I rake them up?

Fallen leaves that are left unattended on your lawn can impede the recovery and potential benefits of your lawn aeration, so we recommend gently raking or blowing off leaves daily. Do this carefully so as not to damage the lawn surface when doing so.

The aeration holes don’t make their way up to the edges of my lawn, why is there this gap?

The width of the aerator that we use here at Lawntech may restrict us from aerating right up to your edges so this isn’t usual.

How long will my lawn take to recover from aeration?

The cores can take a couple of weeks to melt back into the sward, but recovery time can vary depending on grass type and weather conditions.
