Lawn Moss Treatment Aftercare Advice

During autumn and winter, in the UK when the weather can be particularly damp and dull during these seasons, moss has a tendency to thrive and can quickly take over our beloved lawns. Over time, moss can form a thick layer that will choke out the grass plants and weaken your lawn.

Applying moss treatment

Lawntech Laying Wildflower Turf

At Lawntech, we apply a special blend of liquid iron which not only effectively controls moss but hardens the conditions and the grass plants throughout the winter making your lawn hardier to withstand the harsher weather conditions this time of year.

Moss be gone!

Once moss treatment has been applied, the moss will transform into a dark, black hue. This is a sign that the treatment is effectively targeting and weakening the moss. As part of our annual lawn care programme, we carry out your moss treatment in October, November or December alongside your lawn’s autumn nutrient treatment, and a second application of moss treatment is required in January or February to effectively control moss.

Can I walk on my lawn after moss treatment has been applied?

Keep off the lawn for as long as possible or until the next day to allow the treatment time to dry to avoid staining paving.

Can my dog go on the lawn after moss treatment has been applied?

Keep your dog off the lawn for as long as possible or until the next day to allow the treatment time to dry. If your dog needs to use the lawn to toilet after a few hours of application, then we recommend wiping their paws before they enter the house to make sure the product doesn’t stain paws or flooring. This product is not toxic to pets but there is a small risk of skin irritation if wet.

How long before grazing animals can use the lawn after moss treatment has been applied?

Grazing animals must be kept off for three weeks after treatment. We suggest keeping an area of the lawn untreated where the animals can remain until they can be moved back once the treatment has been taken up and grown out of the plant.

Can I mow my lawn after moss treatment has been applied?

Do not mow your lawn for 48 hours after moss treatment application.

Can I water my lawn after moss treatment has been applied?

Do not water your lawn for 12 hours after application to allow the treatment time to dry.

You advise not to water for 12 hours after the moss treatment has been applied, but it has rained after the treatment application, will it work?

We advise not to water your lawn for 12 hours after application as we don’t want to add any additional water to that which mother nature may provide so we advise you not to water your lawn yourself until the treatment has dried. Damp conditions help the treatment be absorbed into the moss, so rainfall is helpful to moss treatment so long as it is not torrential. Wind or excessive rainfall can cause a problem for moss treatment applications. Moss treatment cannot be carried out in frosty weather.

How long will the moss treatment take to work?

The treatment will begin to work immediately. Once applied, the moss will turn black as it dies back. Sometimes in colder conditions, the treatment can go darker than usual and cause the lawn to blacken but not die. This will grow out fairly quickly and isn’t anything to be concerned about. Once the moss has turned black and died back, it can be gently raked out, although it will shrink back by itself and the grass will then take over and fill back into these areas. You can compost the clippings.

There is still moss in the edges of my lawn, why have these areas not been treated?

We can’t always spray up to the edges of your lawn, but we do our best to get as close as possible. This is because the moss treatment is an iron liquid, so we don’t want to cause any scorching to shrubs.

The moss treatment has been applied, but there is now new moss appearing in my lawn, why is this?

Moss cannot be definitively eradicated, and it will return in the appropriate conditions, but it can be effectively controlled. Moss treatment is applied during autumn and winter while conditions are cool and damp. One treatment during these months is not enough to give complete control and, therefore, we usually carry out one treatment between October and December and a second between January and March as part of your annual lawn care programme.

My lawn doesn’t have any moss so why was this treatment carried out?

You may not see visible moss in your lawn, but the spores are there ready to spring into action in the right conditions. Moss treatment will prevent the spread of these spores and any moss from creeping in and will also help to strengthen the grass plants over the winter months.
