Leather Jackets Grub Control Aftercare Advice

Leather Jackets are the larvae of the crane fly (also known as daddy longlegs) and are pests commonly found in lawns across the UK. They live just below the surface of the lawn until they emerge as adult flies during August- October. The adult flies then lay eggs and new grubs start feasting on your lawn, beginning the cycle again.

Damage to lawn caused by Leatherjackets

Leatherjackets are difficult to see in the lawn but can cause extensive damage by eating through roots and weakening turf, so it’s usually not until they wreak havoc on your lawn that an infestation is identified.

Acelepryn is a pesticide that was approved in 2023 to control grubs in your lawn. It can only be applied by licensed and qualified professional lawn care operators. If you have recently had this grub control applied to your lawn to treat your Leather Jacket infestation, then any eggs recently laid by the crane fly will be vulnerable to this treatment.

Can I walk on my lawn after the grub control treatment has been applied?

As good practice, we advise you to stay off your lawn for a few hours to allow the treatment time to dry.

Can my pets use the lawn after the grub control treatment has been applied?

Acelepryn is the active ingredient within the grub control treatment and is safe for pets and humans. However, where possible we advise you to keep your pets off the lawn until the treatment has dried as good practice.

I often have birds on my lawn, is the treatment harmful to wildlife?

Acelepryn is a targeted pesticide that is specific to grubs but will not impact birds or mammals. We will be taking careful precautions in the timing of application and inspection of the site as this product is harmful to bees. This will limit contamination of non-target species such as pollinators. We will leave at least 1m barrier when spraying near water courses, we will not be treating wildflower turf, and we will not apply this product when weeds or plants in the turf are in flower. You will have been notified by your technician to mow your lawn before application to cut off any flowering heads that may be present in the lawn.

Can I mow my lawn after the grub control treatment has been applied?

Your lawn is not to be mown for 48 hours after treatment application. We also advise that you do not collect the cuttings of your lawn for your first 3 mows. We advise the cuttings to be left on the lawn to allow any product to go into the soil and not taken away which can lessen the effect.

Should I water my lawn after the grub control treatment has been applied?

To transfer the product from the leaf onto the soil, the grub control treatment should be lightly watered into the lawn. Your technician will have notified you to water well prior to application and ensure good moisture levels on the day of application.

Why can’t I see any visible results?

There are no instant visible results for this treatment, but any eggs that have recently been laid by the crane fly should be impacted. Therefore, the damage to your lawn should be significantly reduced, enhancing the possibility of grass recovery in the coming months.
