Top Dressing Aftercare Advice

If you have had a lawn renovation, you may have had top dressing applied to help with the recovery of your lawn. This technique improves soil structure by preventing soil compaction and promoting root growth and helps to smooth minor imperfections, creating a more uniform appearance for your lawn.

Top dressing process

This process involves spreading a thin layer of nutrient-rich material over your existing grass. As the top dressing integrates with the turf, it encourages a denser more resilient turf with improved soil structure and a boost in nutrient levels.

Your top dressing application will likely have been applied following our renovation process (scarification, aeration, and over-seeding) to speed up the recovery and assist germination after overseeding. Though it will take some time for your lawn to recover, surface quality will have been improved for beautiful results and a smooth finish.

Can I walk on my lawn after the top dressing has been applied?

It is best to keep off the lawn as much as you can to allow the top dressing time to settle, any traffic on the lawn will disturb this. This is the same advice if your top dressing has been applied following our renovation process to give your lawn the best chance of recovery.

Can my dog go on the lawn after the top dressing has been applied?

This is tricky as we understand your furry friends need to stretch their legs and toilet, but we do recommend you keep your dog off the lawn as much as possible to allow the top dressing time to settle. The length of time this takes varies depending on factors such as weather conditions and the top dressing materials used.

What material is top dressing?

Most top dressings are made up of a mix of sand and loam, but which proportion this is applied will have been discussed by your technician. This follows his careful selection depending on the soil type and goals of the top dressing application.

Will top dressing level my lawn?

Trop dressing won’t flatten an uneven lawn, but it will fill in cracks and gaps, and help minor indentations and imperfections for a smoother finish.

Should I water my lawn once the top dressing has been applied?

We recommend gentle watering with a sprinkler system. Avoid using a powerful hose which may displace the top dressing. If conditions are dry, and there is no forecast of steady rain then we recommend gently watering your lawn daily.

I have had a lawn renovation, but I haven’t had top dressing applied to my lawn, why is this?

Typically, most domestic lawns do not require top dressing and it is only often required when our more intensive lawn renovation is carried out. Top dressing is more commonly required on ornamental lawns and playing surfaces such as golf greens, bowling greens and football pitches.
