Wetting Agent Treatment Aftercare Advice

A wetting agent is applied to your lawn by Lawntech to improve water penetration into the soil and increase the ability of the soil to retain moisture. The hotter, drier summers that we are experiencing, and limited water resources mean this treatment is becoming more important to improve the quality of your lawn.

If you have had our granular wetting agent applied to your lawn by Lawntech, this will work in three ways to increase the moisture levels for a healthier lawn. This will reduce the surface tension of the water stopping it from forming droplets and allowing it to spread in a film, break down the waxy coating on soil particles allowing water to penetrate the soil, and, once there, it helps the soil to retain it. A wetting agent will also reduce waterlogging that is caused by surface water.

We’ve been monitoring our soil test patches in our research and development area at Lawntech HQ to explore the benefits of wetting agents. You can see in the image above the square test plots that have had a wetting treatment applied in comparison to the area that has been left untreated and the difference this has made to the lawn over three months. The wetting agent treatment can be effective for up to five months. If required, an aeration may be carried out prior to treatment to help the product work effectively.

Can I walk on my lawn after a wetting agent treatment has been applied?

It is fine to walk on your lawn following the application of a wetting agent treatment.

Is it safe for my dog to use the lawn following a wetting agent treatment?

It is safe for dogs to use the lawn following a wetting agent treatment.

Can I mow my lawn after a wetting agent treatment?

Do not mow your lawn for 48 hours after a wetting agent treatment application.

Do I still need to water my lawn once a wetting agent treatment has been applied?

The wetting agent treatment needs water to activate so if you can, we advise that you water your lawn following application. The wetting agent will help your soil to retain the moisture it receives but won’t replace moisture altogether. We still advise watering your lawn, though this does mean you can water less frequently to also reduce your water bill.

Your technician will understand your soil type so if you have an irrigation system, talk to your technician about the correct settings and watering frequency.

How long does the wetting agent treatment last?

Granular wetting agent treatment can last for up to five months in domestic lawns providing it is applied in the spring when conditions are wet or when it is thoroughly watered in.

Will the wetting agent treatment stop my lawn from going brown in dry weather?

No, all plants need moisture, but it will help the lawn not to dry out as fast and will ensure the lawn recovers quicker after a drought. If you water your lawn during dry weather it makes the watering more efficient, so you need a lot less water.
