Resolutions for the new year are a motivating and positive start for many, and though we try hard to stick to them, we quickly find life gets in the way and very soon that glow of a fresh new year can quickly wear off. But some resolutions can be easier to keep…

Make a resolution to keep your lawn in tip-top shape

Get your outdoor space into shape this year with these 5 top tips to a fuller, greener lawn.

Fertilise, fertilise, fertilise

The right balance of nutrients is a key ingredient to a healthy lawn. Applying a fertiliser at the right time of year starting in Spring, will feed your lawn the nutrients it needs to increase vigour and strengthen your grass.

However, it’s important to remember that anyone can apply a cheap nitrogen fertiliser to their lawn, but this doesn’t mean it will be beneficial. It is essential to apply products which are relatively low in nitrogen and contain nutrients and organisms which work with the soil to unlock the full potential of your lawn.

Get control of weeds

Weeds can be invasive and faster growing than grass plants. Some have broad leaves which, if left untreated, can choke the lawn, and others creep which ends up spreading across your whole lawn.  Treating weeds in early summer (their prime growing season) with a selective herbicide, will keep weeds under control and prevent them from invading your manicured lawn.

At Lawntech, our team of NPTC (National Pesticide Training Certificate) qualified technicians use selective, non-residual herbicides to target only weeds, not grass, for effective weed control in the most environmentally friendly way we can. Good lawn irrigation

Like any plant, your lawn needs water to survive so no matter how much love and care we give to our lawn, without a sufficient amount of water, your lawn will suffer. We recommend watering 1 or 2 times a week in the evening or early morning when the temperatures are cooler and less of the moisture will be lost to the sun or wind.

There are various high-tech gadgets and irrigation systems on the market, but given that our UK climate is steady, keeping on top of the watering with a hose or sprinkler should be sufficient. For more useful information and advice on lawn irrigation, see our website here. You can also calculate how much it costs to water your lawn with our handy watering tool.

The grass plant obtains most of its water from the soil. If the soil is left to dry out for several days, the grass plant’s growth will start to slow down.

Mow, mow, mow your lawn

That’s right, you’ve heard it here before; if it’s growing, keep on mowing! Mowing not only keeps the lawn looking neat and tidy but is an essential part of garden maintenance to help improve the overall health of the grass.

Get a good mowing practice this year and your lawn will certainly thank you. For more advice and information on mowing your lawn and best mowing heights, please visit our website here.
