Mr M, Christchurch

Mr M’s lawn is a great example of the partnership between Lawntech and our customers. Thanks to regular mowing and watering, when needed, this lawn has made it to our Showcase.

Lawntech’s comments about this lawn

This south coast lawn is looking excellent considering it is grown on grown on naturally occurring sandy soil which can be quite challenging. Lawns grown on sand-based soil have the benefit of draining freely but are very prone to drying out quickly when we get prolonged, hot dry spells.  Mr M’s lawn also has quite a few surrounding trees which also suck a huge amount of moisture from the soil during the summer months.  There is a few things we can do to help the lawn along during dry spells so that the summer does not spell disaster.  In this case Mr W has allowed us to aerate and scarify and over-seed to ensure water has an easy pathway to the root zone, for best results this should be done every year, but even once every few years helps.  Lawns which are compacted or have thatch will resist summer rain or watering which leads to the water remaining on the surface where it evaporates or simply rolls off the surface of the lawn because it cannot penetrate the soil easily.  These mechanical treatments mean that less watering is required during the summer to keep the lawn going.

This lawn has responded extremely well to our 5 visits per year, annual lawn care programme which includes organic based fertiliser, selective herbicide and autumn and winter moss control. Most of our customers, with lawns large or small, have this annual lawn care programme.  Sometimes for very stressed lawns grown on sandy soil we recommend two additional treatments of wetting agent during the early and late spring which reduces surface tension in the soil and helps to prevent Dry-Patch where the soil becomes so dry it becomes hydrophobic due to a white, waxy mycelium forming in the soil.
